Self-exclusion is a voluntary step to restrict access to gambling or chance-based gaming. It may be implemented by an individual operator or a state-run program. Because the processes differ, first identify which operator accounts and jurisdictions you need to cover.
Time-out versus self-exclusion
| Tool | General purpose | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Short time-out | Take an immediate break from a specific account | Minimum duration, effect on active promotions, and reactivation process |
| Operator self-exclusion | Restrict use of one operator's products for a selected period | Products covered, login access, marketing restrictions, and duration |
| State self-exclusion | Apply protective restrictions to services within a particular jurisdiction | Participating operators, legal implications, application process, and reinstatement |
How to request an account restriction
- Identify affected accounts. Write down platforms and accounts you want restricted.
- Find the operator's official responsible-play controls. Look inside account settings or the published help center. Do not send identity documents to this publisher.
- Request the restriction directly. Follow the operator's own submission instructions; keep a dated copy of any confirmation.
- Check the scope. Ask whether related accounts, marketing messages, payments and outstanding balances are affected.
- Consider state-level programs and support. A single operator exclusion may not cover other services.
Does an operator restriction cover every gaming site?
Not necessarily. An account-level restriction is usually specific to that operator, while state voluntary-exclusion programs may cover defined licensees or categories. Do not assume one request blocks every site or every type of gaming. Contact the relevant state authority for the official scope.
Independent support can make a plan more sustainable
The National Problem Gambling Helpline connects US callers and texters to local resources. Call or text 1-800-MY-RESET (1-800-697-3738) or visit the support directory. The service is not an emergency response line.
What this guide cannot do
EN-US YOLO cannot suspend or delete third-party accounts, submit an operator self-exclusion request for a reader, or provide legal or clinical advice. For account-level controls, contact the operator directly using its authenticated support process. For additional prevention steps, see Responsible Gambling.
